Meperidine is a narcotic analgesic about a tenth as potent as morphine and used for the treatment of moderate to severe pain. It is commonly abused and has the potential for addiction. Also known by the name Demerol, it is available in injections, capsules, and tablets.
Meperidine reduces the pain connected with muscle spasms. This drug's effects last only a couple of hours, making it valuable for relief of short-term pain. Side-effects include twitches, tremors, and convulsions. Meperidine can also cause breathing problems for women in labor.
